LSMSA Students Attend 41st Annual Foreign Language Festival
The 41st Annual Foreign Language Festival was held on Friday, March 15 at Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) in Hammond.
A group of 11 languages students from Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) participated in the daylong event, which was organized by the Department of World Languages and Cultures at SLU. During the festival, students from across Louisiana competed in extemporaneous speaking, prose, poetry, music, theatre, and native-speaker translation in both French and Spanish. LSMSA students took home top honors in several categories of the juried competition. Chaperones for the trip included Dr. Nathalie Malti, Dr. Morris Tichenor, and Dr. Telba Espinoza-Contreras.
In French, the following students placed in their respective levels:
French Recitation (Level 1): 1st place – Layla East ('26) French Recitation (Level 3): 2nd place – Kushal Upadhyay ('24) French Recitation (Level 4): 3rd place – Lucy Centanni ('26) French Extemporaneous Speaking (Level 3): 2nd place – Chloé LaCarrière ('24) French Extemporaneous Speaking (Level 4): 2nd place – Adé Adjignon ('24) French Music: 3rd place – Summerlyn Schwartz ('25)
In Spanish, the following student placed in their level:
Spanish Recitation (Level 2): 2nd place – Cam Magee ('24)
Also attending the festival were Olivia Marant ('25), Colin Perret ('25), Valentine Williams ('24), and Amelia Willis ('26).
LSMSA’s participation in the event was made possible by the LSMSA Foundation’s Student Enrichment Fund, which covered a portion of travel expenses for the trip.
LSMSA is a tuition-free, public high school for high-achieving rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a nominal room and board fee to cover housing, meals, and campus activities.
