Students attending LSMSA have opportunities to study and perform in a wide variety of Arts disciplines. They include:
MUSIC - Students may audition to take private lessons in piano, voice, or most instruments. For those with no prior training, entry-level classes are offered in voice and piano. Students can also take Music Theory and Composition. LSMSA vocalists have many opportunities to perform in Chorale (a classical choir) as well as in solo performances and a number of state and regional competitions. Advanced pianists and instrumentalists can also prepare solo recitals and participate in state and regional competitions. Instrumentalists can audition for the LSMSA Wind or Chamber Ensembles, and some even perform with ensembles at Northwestern State University, including the Natchitoches/Northwestern Symphony.
DANCE - Dance course offerings include beginning through advanced levels of Ballet, Modern and Jazz techniques. Course offerings also include Intro to Dance, Dance Improvisation, Dance Composition and Dance History on a rotational basis. The LSMSA Dance Ensemble, the student dance company, is open by audition only. The Dance Ensemble produces an informal fall concert as well as an annual spring dance concert.
THEATRE - Students may take classes in Acting I or II and Stagecraft, and have opportunities to work in Speech and Musical Theatre. A popular interdisciplinary course is Studies in Dramatic Text and Performance. The primary acting ensemble is the Theatre Repertory Company, which presents a major production each semester.
VISUAL ARTS - Entry-level classes for budding artists include Drawing and Design. For more advanced students, we have specialized courses in Painting, Watercolor, Printmaking, Ceramics, and Sculpture. Student work is exhibited regularly throughout the school and each year, some of the top work becomes part of the school's permanent collection.
CREATIVE WRITING - This is our newest offering under the Arts umbrella. Students have opportunities to study Poetry, Fiction, Drama, and Literary Non-Fiction. Submission for publication is a requirement in all Creative Writing courses.
At LSMSA, you will be taught and mentored by artists, musicians, composers, writers, actors, and dancers/choreographers. Join us in making great art.

This semester long course explores the global perspective on the interaction between contemporary art and culture as well as why individuals should study and examine art generally. It also allows the student to learn common art terms while providing the opportunity to analyze and interpret work using the language associated with art critique. Individuals will view historic and contemporary examples of how concept and design is used in a variety or art forms, focusing on pieces that push the boundaries of convention and have had a real effect on society. (One semester; 0.5 unit of credit). Fundamentals of Theatrical and Comedic Improvisation. Students will develop communication skills, audition skills, and overall performance awareness, performing in teams on a regular basis using increasingly complicated forms and culminating in a Harold, the keystone of long-form improvisation. Students will read, analyze, discuss, and present concepts for up to 10 important theatre scripts over the course of the semester, with the intention of studying plays as a director would prior to conducting auditions. Each semester may focus on different offerings of theatre (Pulitzer Winners, Theatre for Social Change, 20th Century, etc.). Possible viewing and critique of both LSMSA and NSU performances. Through improvisation and scene study, actors will utilize moment work and critique to further their use of objectives, actions, and motivation as they construct fully developed characters.
