Campus Closure Notice from Dr. Steve Horton

Read Dr. Steve Horton's message to students concerning the weather-related closure of campus, Jan. 20-26.
Dear LSMSA Community,

I hope you’ve all enjoyed a great first week of class.

We have been closely monitoring the weather forecast for next week.  Models continue to indicate that Natchitoches temperatures will be at or below freezing for several days with potential for snow early on Tuesday as well as a mix of sleet and snow Thursday - Friday.  Out of an abundance of caution and concern that there could be potential water and/or power outages on campus, the decision has been made to close campus effective at noon on Monday, January 20.  Campus will re-open at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 26.

Here’s what you need to know and do as we move through the next few days.
Departures from Campus, Returns to Campus, and Leave Requests
  • The Eagle Arctics Required Weekend is a graduation requirement and is not being cancelled and remains unchanged.
  • You may begin signing out of the residence hall as early as 7 a.m. on Saturday, January 18. The LLC will close at noon on Monday, January 20.
  • On Sunday, Jan. 19, we will run the Eagle Bus Service for students to return to their homes. The Eagle Bus Service will depart from the LLC at 10 a.m. There will be NO CHARGE for this one-way trip, and we will accept registrations on a first-come, first-serve basis. We have 56 seats available.
  • A separate communication will be coming from me shortly (to you and to your parents) regarding bus trips and registrations, including registration links, itineraries for both departing and returning trips.
  • You may begin entering your leave requests now with a return date of January 26. Do not plan to leave campus before 7 a.m. on Saturday.
  • Please coordinate with Nurse Allison in Health Services to sign out your medications for the week.
Meals
  • Dining services on campus will remain open through breakfast on Monday.
  • No lunch or dinner will be served on Monday.
  • So that our dining services team can accurately plan, we are asking you to submit your leave requests as soon as possible so that your parent/guardian can grant timely approval for those requests.

Classes and Academic Calendar
  • Classes will not be held on campus on Monday. Classes will pivot to asynchronous online instruction via myLSMSA, and your teachers will reach out to you via email to set expectations.  Please know that if your home experiences power or internet outages, your teachers will work with you to help you get caught up once services are restored or upon your return to campus.
  • Mrs. Couvillion will contact Dual Enrollment students with information about NSU timelines.  Do not attempt to register for classes until you receive specific instructions from her.
  • We are adjusting the Academic Calendar – the Last Day to Add a Class is Tuesday, January 28.
  • Work Service for the Spring semester will begin on Monday, January 27.
Before leaving the LLC
  • Be sure to take your laptop and any textbooks and class supplies that you may need for the week.
  • Be sure to remove any personal items off of the floor that could potentially be damaged in the event your room or suite experiences any leaks. Personal items may include your clothing, shoes, area rugs, etc.
  • Be sure to clean out and unplug your refrigerators as well.
  • All trash in your room should be taken to the trash room on your hall.
We will continue to monitor conditions around the state and will update you via email, the school’s website, and social media should circumstances on campus require any changes to this plan.

Please stay warm and safe during the upcoming week.
