LSMSA Sends Sixteen Students to State Beta Club Convention in Lafayette, Jan. 29-31


Bryan Chen (’26), Bailey Derouen ('25), Rozzie Hubbell ('26), Jacob Hypes ('25), and Wesley Maidoh (’25) took home honors in various individual and team competitions.

National Beta Club members from Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) recently participated in the 76th Annual Senior Beta Convention held at the Cajundome in Lafayette, Jan. 29-31. Club sponsor Bonnie Rutledge, Administrative Coordinator of LSMSA’s College Counseling Center, said that sixteen students from LSMSA traveled to take part in a range of individual and team competitions. Rutledge was joined by Dr. Chris Hynes, Senior Lecturer of Chemistry and Student Research Advisor, as a chaperone for the trip.
 
“Students took academic tests before attending the convention, and there were on-site competitions that the students participated in, as well,” Rutledge said. “I am very proud of all my Beta members who competed and represented LSMSA.” 
 
Five LSMSA students earned awards during the competition, including (in alphabetical order): 
 
Bryan Chen (’26), of Natchitoches, State Champion in 11th Grade Math
Bailey Derouen ('25), of Reeves, 3rd in Jewelry Division II
Rozzie Hubbell ('26), of Schriever, 3rd in 11th Grade Language Arts
Jacob Hypes ('25), of Natchitoches, 10th in Harris Kennedy Scholarship  
Wesley Maidoh (’25), of Houma, 8th in Harris Kennedy Scholarship    
 
With more than 500,000 active members and 14,000 clubs nationally and internationally, National Beta has become the nation’s largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization. National Beta promotes the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students. The National Beta Convention will be held at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando, Florida during Summer 2025.
