Meet Emma Fick ('09), the Artist Behind a Popular Illustration of LSMSA

Emma Fick ('09) created a watercolor illustration of LSMSA that is available as a limited-edition print now through July 1.
LSMSA alum Emma Fick (’09) is a Covington, LA native whose bio states that her work “centers on hybrids: merging Louisiana-specific symbols and ancient Byzantine frescoes; creating half-human, half-bird mythological creatures; combining plant species in ways not found in nature.”

At the invitation of the LSMSA Foundation, Fick created a watercolor-and-ink illustration of LSMSA’s beloved High School Building. Fick’s illustration has since been printed on t-shirts, stickers, and magnets, and is now available in a limited edition, signed and numbered print that has become one of the Foundation’s most popular donor gifts ever. To receive the print, magnet, or sticker as a thank-you gift, make a donation here. Gifts must be received by July 1, 2024 in order to receive a print of Fick's illustration.

“It was a full-circle moment for me," Fick said. "I didn’t study art in college, so my experiences in art classrooms at LSMSA constitute the most formative, formal art experiences for me.”

Fick described the experience of studying art at LSMSA as a journey that helped her develop confidence and self-awareness.

“I remember the art teachers—Chris King especially—taking us as students very seriously, which was empowering and made me take my work seriously,” she said.

Fick hopes that her illustration will help the LSMSA Foundation raise funds that will be used to enhance the LSMSA experience for students, faculty, and staff while bringing LSMSA alumni together.

“It feels wonderful to be able to do something, anything, to contribute to the longevity and prosperity of this safe haven for smart kids in Louisiana,” she said. “The fact that this illustration will serve as a sort of visual connective tissue between alumni across the country makes me feel proud to have been asked to contribute in this way, and more tapped into the LSMSA alumni community on a personal level.”

The LSMSA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission to develop and manage resources that enhance the work of LSMSA. Donations to the LSMSA Foundation are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Learn more about the LSMSA Foundation or join the mailing list at LSMSA.edu.
