Student Spotlight: LSMSA Groups Take Top Prizes at January Events

LSMSA’s Beta Club chapter made an impressive showing at the 75th Annual Senior Beta Convention, Jan. 10-12, including student Roz Hubbell, who won first prize and was named State Champion in 10th Grade Language Arts. A total of 18 LSMSA students competed and, club contact Bonnie Rutledge said, “all of them did a great job.”

The LSMSA chapter of the International Thespian Society placed second overall in the Louisiana State Thespian Festival held at NSU, Jan. 19-20, where LSMSA students performed in front of more than 900 theatre students from across the state. Among the 15 LSMSA students who performed, chapter contacts Karn Richoux and Scott Theriot reported that student Jay Trosclair auditioned for universities from all over the state and received scholarship offers from 11 schools.

Dr. Chris Hynes leads a group of five LSMSA science students who recently qualified as state finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition. The group, which includes students Anastasia Adams-Giron, Leah Aranas, Sebastian Lee, Alivelu Morampudi, and Peter Yu, is working to develop an inexpensive and sustainable water purification technology. By being named state finalists, they’ve already won $2,500 worth of classroom technology from Samsung. Other LSMSA students advancing in national competitions include the Quiz Bowl team, who qualified for the NAQT National Small School Championships, and Future Business Leaders of America, whose 24 members took home seven first-place finishes and an invitation to statewide competition.
