LSMSA Gallery to Host Opening Reception for "Iterative Mycologies" on Tuesday, Apr. 9, 4-6 p.m.

Dr. Claire J. Amy, Anne Bujold, Kristie Cornell, and Magdolene Dykstra will visit LSMSA on Tuesday, Apr. 9. The artists will be joined by art education students from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL) for a workshop with LSMSA student artists beginning at 2:30 p.m. The workshop will be followed by an open-to-the-public reception for Iterative Mycologies, 4-6 p.m.

 

The reception will be held in the LSMSA Gallery on the ground floor of the Center for Performance & Technology (CPT) at LSMSA. The main entrance to the CPT is located immediately to the southwest of the High School Building. Admission is free.   

 

“A lot of our visiting artists are grad students or professors, so we invite the public to these receptions in order to provide our artists with as much exposure as possible,” said LSMSA Principal Lecturer of Visual Arts Chris King. “We always have food and music at these events, as well as work service students available to lend a hand with the show.”

 

Iterative Mycologies is the first time that these four artists have collaborated. The show features numerous multimedia works—some very large and some very small—portraying different kinds of fungi found in the natural world. The exhibit has been described by its creators as “an attempt to understand the inner workings of fungal systems and their potential to serve as a model for our adaptability, reciprocity, and collaboration.” The resulting works “highlight mycelium’s aesthetic beauty and evolutionary brilliance” while “providing an immersive experience for the viewer as they are enveloped in the world of the fungi.”

 

Claire J. Amy, PhD is a visual arts educator and artist who currently holds the position of

Assistant Professor of Art Education at ULL. Dr. Amy serves as the current President of the Louisiana Art Education Association and is a member of the Louisiana State Arts Council. Anne Bujold combines metalsmithing and blacksmithing techniques with alternative materials such as felt, ribbon, and plastics. Bujold is the Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Kristie Cornell is a photographer, geologist, and educator living and working in Lafayette. Her work explores her relationship to the natural and cultural landscapes of her home. Magdolene Dykstra is an artist and educator. Working in sculpture, installation, and mark-making, Dykstra’s practice focuses on exploring the tension between individuality and collectivity, visibility and anonymity, impermanence, and the embedded potential for transformation.
